For place 7: Egypt – Japan U17 74:62 (19:14, 22:20, 18:13, 15:15)

Schon vor dem Spiel war klar, dass beide Teams auf ihren jeweils besten Platzierungen beim AST landen würden. Zuvor waren die Japaner 2020 auf dem zehnten Platz gelandet, die Ägypter 2018 auf Platz elf. Ägypten startete mit acht unbeantworteten Punkten. Davon zehrten die Nordostafrikaner im weiteren Verlauf. Japan kam zwischenzeitlich besser ins Spiel, aber die Ägypter lebten von ihren Dreiern, die immer wieder zum richtigen Zeitpunkt fielen (31:20, 16.). Dann war Japan wieder da (36:32, 19.) und zum Seitenwechsel war noch alles offen.

Japans Bester Riku Segawa brachte sein Team auf 44:40 heran (24.). Anschließend verließ er das Spielfeld und es war wie über das gesamte Spiel hinweg. Ohne Segawa hatte Japan kaum eine Chance. Nach einem Dunk von Ali Assran hieß es 53:40, kurz später dann 59:43 (30.). Im Schlussviertel konnte Japan dann nichts mehr zusetzen, Ägypten brachte das Spiel sicher nach Hause und sicherte sich Platz sieben.

Even before the match it was clear that both teams would finish in their respective best positions at the AST. The Japanese had previously finished tenth in 2020 and the Egyptians eleventh in 2018. Egypt started with eight unanswered points. The north-east Africans fed off this as the game progressed. Japan got into the game better at times, but the Egyptians thrived on their threes, which kept coming at the right time (31:20, 16.). Japan was then back in the game (36:32, 19.) and everything was still open at the break.

Japan’s best player, Riku Segawa, pulled his team back to 44:40 (24.). He then left the court and it was the same as the entire game. Without Segawa, Japan hardly had a chance. A dunk by Ali Assran made it 53:40 and shortly afterwards 59:43 (30.). Japan was then unable to add anything in the final quarter and Egypt safely brought the game home to secure seventh place.

For place 5: Slovenia – Greece 65:56 (18:13, 19:10, 18:10, 10:23)

Griechenland mit gutem Beginn und nach den Freiwürfen von Panagiotis Pagonis der frühen 0:7-Führung. Im Gegenzug taten sich die Slowenen beim Ballvortrag schwer und erzielten nach knapp vier Minuten ihren ersten Treffer aus dem Feld. In der Folge Slowenien aber klar besser und nach 8:0-Lauf in Führung (8:7, 6.). Zum Ende des ersten Viertels behielten die Slowenen Kontrolle über das Spiel und nahmen eine Fünf-Punkte-Führung mit in die Pause (18:13). Im zweiten Viertel plätscherte die Partie ohne sonderliche Highlights dahin. Slowenien mit leichtem Polster, während Griechenland sich ohne Topscorer Liotopoulos im Halbfeld schwer tat (28:22, 16.). Zu allem Überfluss für die Griechen begann Mark Padjen in der Schlussphase der ersten Halbzeit aufzudrehen. Seine Punkte nach Ballgewinn stellten auf 34:23.

Auch nach der Pause kamen die Griechen nicht zur ihrem gewohnten Spiel und liefen den Slowenen zumeist hinterher. Mark Padjen avancierte weiterhin zum Matchwinner und stand zu Beginn des Schlussviertels bei 21 Punkten. In der Endphase des Spiels steigerten sich die Griechen etwas und kam über Pagonis wieder auf unter 20 Punkte Rückstand (63:50, 37.). Die Slowenen holten am Ende trotzdem hochverdient den fünften Platz (65:56).

Greece got off to a good start and took an early 0:7 lead after Panagiotis Pagonis‘ free throws. In return, the Slovenians struggled to move the ball forward and scored their first goal from the field after just under four minutes. However, Slovenia then clearly improved and took the lead after an 8:0 run (8:7, 6.). The Slovenians kept control of the game at the end of the first quarter and took a five-point lead into the break (18:13). The game rippled along without any particular highlights in the second quarter. Slovenia had a slight cushion, while Greece struggled in the half-court without top scorer Liotopoulos (28:22, 16.). To make matters worse for the Greeks, Mark Padjen began to turn on the heat in the final phase of the first half. His points after winning possession made it 34:23.

The Greeks did not get back to their usual game after the break either and mostly trailed the Slovenians. Mark Padjen continued to be the match-winner and had 21 points at the start of the final quarter. The Greeks stepped up their game somewhat in the final period and were able to close the gap to less than 20 points again through Pagonis (63:50, 37). Nevertheless, the Slovenians deserved to finish fifth (65:56).
