AST 2024: Die "Ones to Watch" beim Albert Schweitzer Turnier

Am morgigen Samstag, 30. März 2024 startet das 30. Albert Schweitzer Turnier in Mannheim/Viernheim. Mit dabei elf Nationen aus vier Kontinenten und jede Menge junge Talente der jeweiligen U17- und U18-Bereiche. Wir haben die Roster der Teilnehmer genauer unter die Lupe genommen und einige vielversprechende Spieler ausfindig gemacht, die beim AST für Aufsehen sorgen könnten.

This Saturday, March 30, 2024, the 30th Albert Schweitzer Tournament will start in Mannheim/Viernheim. Eleven nations from four continents and plenty of young talent from the U17 and U18 divisions will be taking part. We took a closer look at the rosters of the participants and identified some promising players who could cause a stir at the AST.

ZU DEN TEAMSEITEN DES AST

Rocco Zikarsky (Australia)

Der 2,20 m große Center wurde 2022 U16-Asienmeister und war mit 11,5 Punkten, 10,7 Rebounds und 2,2 Blocks Teil des Team des Turniers. Im selben Jahr erreichte der Australier beim U17 World Cup den sechsten Platz. Bei diesem führte Zikarsky die Australier mit 13,6 Punkten, 9,3 Rebounds und 3,1 Blocks als Topscorer an. Für die A-Nationalmannschaft kam der Center Ende Februar im Rahmen der Asia Cup 2025 Qualifers zum Einsatz.

The 2.20 m tall center became U16 Asian champion in 2022 and was part of the team of the tournament with 11.5 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.2 blocks. In the same year, the Australian finished sixth at the U17 World Cup. Zikarsky led the Australians as top scorer with 13.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.1 blocks. The center played for the senior national team in the Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers at the end of February.

Boyuan Zhang (China)

Mit 34 Punkten im Spiel um Platz drei verhalf der 2,03 m große Forward China zur Bronzemedaille beim Asia Cup 2023. Über den Turnierverlauf stach Zhang mit 20,3 Punkten und fünf Rebounds heraus und wurde ins Team des Turniers gewählt. Zudem traf Zhang bei fast sechs Dreiern pro Spiel über 47%.

With 34 points in the third-place game, the 2.03-meter forward helped China win the bronze medal at the Asia Cup 2023. Over the course of the tournament, Zhang stood out with 20.3 points and five rebounds and was named to the Team of the Tournament. Zhang also shot over 47% with almost six threes per game.

Mohamed Shahin (Egypt)

Mit 11,4 Punkten, 5,3 Rebounds und 4,6 Rebounds schaffte es der Point-Guard bei den U16 Afrikameisterschaften 2023 ins Team des Turniers. Mit Ägypten kam Shahin bis ins Finale unterlag dort aber Guinea. Vorher erzielte Shahin im Halbfinale gegen Mali 21 Punkte, neun Rebounds und sechs Assists.

With 11.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.6 rebounds, the point guard made the team of the tournament at the 2023 U16 African Championships. Shahin made it to the final with Egypt but lost to Guinea. Before that, Shahin scored 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists in the semi-final against Mali.

Eleftherios-Kosmas Liothopoulos (Greece)

2022 wurde der Point-Guard bei der U16-EM Vierter. Im vergangenen Jahr scheiterte Liothopoulos mit Griechenland im Viertelfinale der U18-EM an Deutschland. Nach einer weiteren Niederlage gegen Israel beendeten die Griechen das Turnier mit einem Sieg über Slowenien und Platz sieben. Liothopoulos legte im Schnitt 14,9 Punkte, 5,1 Rebounds und 2,7 Assists auf.

In 2022, the point guard finished fourth at the U16 European Championships. Last year, Liothopoulos and Greece lost to Germany in the quarter-finals of the U18 European Championships. After another defeat against Israel, the Greeks finished the tournament with a victory over Slovenia and seventh place. Liothopoulos averaged 14.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Maikcol Perez (Italy)

Mit Italien schaltete der 2,03 m große Forward die deutsche Auswahl bei der U16-EM im Viertelfinale aus. Im Halbfinale gegen Frankreich ließ Perez seine Klasse mit 25 Punkten und 15 Rebounds mehr als aufblitzen und führte Italien ins Finale. Dieses verloren die Italiener aber gegen Spanien und holten die Silbermedaille. Mit durchschnittlich 12,7 Punkten, neun Rebounds und 1,7 Steals war Perez Teil des Team des Turniers.

With Italy, the 2.03 m tall forward eliminated the German team in the quarter-finals of the U16 European Championships. In the semi-final against France, Perez more than showed his class with 25 points and 15 rebounds and led Italy into the final. However, the Italians lost this against Spain and took the silver medal. With an average of 12.7 points, nine rebounds and 1.7 steals, Perez was part of the team of the tournament.

Mitar Bosnjakovic (Serbia)

Beim U17 World Cup 2022 erreichte der Forward, der bei Real Madrid spielt, den fünften Platz und lieferte 11,4 Punkte und 5,3 Rebounds. Der große Wurf gelang bei der U18-EM 2023 im eigenen Land. Nachdem man erst Deutschland im Halbfinale bezwang, schlug Serbien im Finale Spanien und sicherte sich Gold. Bosnjakovic hatte dabei mit 21 Punkten und sieben Rebounds großen Anteil. Über das Turnier kam der Forward auf 11,4 Punkte und 4,4 Rebounds.

The forward, who plays for Real Madrid, finished fifth at the 2022 U17 World Cup, scoring 11.4 points and grabbing 5.3 rebounds. The big success came at the 2023 U18 European Championship on home soil. After defeating Germany in the semi-finals, Serbia beat Spain in the final to win gold. Bosnjakovic played a big part in this with 21 points and seven rebounds. The forward averaged 11.4 points and 4.4 rebounds over the tournament.

Christian Anderson (Germany/U18)

Der Guard führte Deutschland 2022 als Turnier-MVP zum Titelgewinn der U16-B-EM und damit zurück in die A-Division. Anderson erzielte dabei 16,5 Punkte und traf 60% seiner Dreier. Bei der abgelaufenen U18-EM holte der deutsche Guard Bronze in Serbien und kam auf 14 Punkte und 2,4 Steals. Im Rahmen des diesjährigen NBA Allstar Weekend in Indianapolis wurde Anderson zum Basketball without Borders Camp eingeladen.

The guard led Germany to the U16-B European Championship title in 2022 as tournament MVP and thus back into the A Division. Anderson scored 16.5 points and hit 60% of his threes. At the last U18 European Championships, the German guard won bronze in Serbia, scoring 14 points and making 2.4 steals. As part of this year’s NBA Allstar Weekend in Indianapolis, Anderson was invited to the Basketball without Borders Camp.

Ian Lazarevski (Slovenia)

Als jüngerer Jahrgang wurde der 2,02 m große Shooting Guard 2022 Siebter bei der U16-EM. Im Folgejahr schaffte er mit Slowenien das Erreichen des sechsten Platzes. Im letzten Spiel, in dem es um Qualifikation für die kommende U17-WM ging, unterlag Slowenien Deutschland. Über das Turnier lieferte Lazarevski 15,3 Punkte, sechs Rebounds, 5,2 Assists und 2,5 Steals.

As a younger player, the 2.02 m tall shooting guard finished seventh at the U16 European Championships in 2022. The following year, he finished sixth with Slovenia. Kaan Onat (Türkiye)

Obwohl die Türkei bei der U16-EM „nur“ auf dem zehnten Platz landete, gehörte der Point-Guard zu den zehn besten Scorern des Turniers. In seinen sieben Partien erzielte Onat dreimal über 20 Punkte und kam im Schnitt auf 15,4. Zudem standen dem Türken 6,4 Rebounds, 3,6 Assists und 2,9 Steals zu Buche.

Although Turkey „only“ finished tenth at the U16 European Championships, the point guard was one of the ten best scorers at the tournament. In his seven games, Onat scored over 20 points three times and averaged 15.4. In addition, the Turk had 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.9 steals.
